Comments: Simply, superbly, awesome! Not just by design and in color, but the quality is tops! The perfectly formed and terminated glassy Rubellite Tourmaline crystal has the most spectacular pink color to it. A exceptional sparkling gem indeed, accented on a matrix of Feldspar and Albite var. Clevelandite. I just cannot keep my eyes of this one. One can only wonder how many more beauties like this “might” come out of Afghanistan anytime in the near future? This one-of-a-kind beauty displays marvelously, and it is guaranteed to keep you spellbound!
Featured Item: Wulfenite and dolomite
Location: Touissit (Morocco)
Item #: WMOR-13/5
Comments: A crystallized mass of tan-colored, saddle-shape dolomite crystals serves as matrix for a number of lustrous, butter-yellow, flat square crystals of wulfenite to 1.2 cm. om edge. They are tabular crystals with the edges bevelled by bypiramids. Some nicks here and there on the wulfenite crystals that do not detract from the general quality of this specimen.
I have been collecting since 1966 – starting at the ripe old age of six! I originally collected pyrites and Herkimer diamonds as I lived in Western New York until I was 13. Now, I collect old German and Italian specimens and rare faceted gemstones. You can see some pictures of my collection in my photo gallery. In addition to my collecting experience, I have a Graduate Gemologist degree from the GIA.My philosophy is simple. I endeavour to offer quality specimens in all price ranges. I try to keep my prices as reasonable as possible. My descriptions, locality information, and photos are as accurate as I can make them. And I value customer service – I will try to answer all inquiries as quickly as possible, whether about my offerings or about mineral collecting and gemmology in general.
Featured Item: Spodumene
Location: Konar Valley, Konar Province, Afghanistan
Size: 14.3 x 2.9 x 2.7 cm
Item #: Afg011
Comments: Excellent crystal of very gemmy, pale yellow-green spodumene. The crystal fluoresces a deep salmon color under LW UV. Some minor edge wear, otherwise in excellent condition. Comes with a custom lucite base. All photos by Joe Budd.
Featured Item: Deeply colored Beryl var. Morganite crystal
Location: Dara-i-Pech, Kunar Province, Afghanistan
Size: 7.2 cm by 13.3 cm by 8 cm in total size
Item #: MIN#TUCSON2017-5
Comments: Deeply colored Beryl var. Morganite crystal perched atop Cleavelandite matrix!
I don’t see many Morganites with this depth of color. The crystal itself measures 7 cm in size, and features brilliant, glassy crystal faces. The interior is loaded with gemminess and the color could best be described as a deep, vibrant orangy-pink, almost peach color. The color is consistant throughout the entire Morganite crystal with a light frosting present on the top horizontal face. The gem crystal is complete on all sides with only a couple of tiny internal stress lines of natural origin. A Morganite of this quality is a rare prize indeed. This would make a great cabinet centerpiece.

Featured Item: Grossular
Location: Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Quebec, Canada

Weight: 9.0 oz
Item No#: ROGA701
Comments: A very colorful specimen of superbly crystallized Grossular from the classic Jeffrey Mine locality in Canada. It features a group of very lustrous and quite GEMMY Grossular garnet crystals inter-joined to create the graceful formation pictured. In pristine condition as seen in the photos. Comes mounted on the acrylic display stand pictured (can be removed on request).
Featured Item: Amethyst Scepters on Smoky Quartz
Location: Greece, Macedonia, Drama, Kato Nevrokopi, Dasoto
Size: 14.5×9.3×7.4cm (Cabinet)
Comments: You are looking at the largest and finest example that we know of from this locality. It was found around 1997 in a large pocket and was numbered as specimen #1 as it was without any doubt the best example. I want to remind that this is an alpine type quartz locality with similar geology to the one on the alps. Sceptering is evident all around this specimen. The amethysts are not just large but also exhibit a fine color and hematite inclusions(some of them). The displa side is almost pristine looking. There is some damage, sadly, but this is the best you can get from there. The locality has become almost impossible to access now as forest covers most of it and we have had no decent new finds since 2010! I bought the piece in 2010 from a collector here in Thessaloniki and have kept it in my collection ever since, until recently.
Featured Item: Perfect Burmese Spinel on Calcite
Location: Mogok, Sagaing Dist., Mandalay Division, Burma
Size: 4.1 x 3.0 x 2.9cm
Item #: FB17-SPINEL
Wow! An absolutely gem-perfect red spinel crystal on pure white calcite from Burma! Most of the combo specimens that you’ll find of this are pretty beat-up and malformed, but this one is the very best! The Spinel octohedron is sharp, lustrous, and gemmy and has incredible, beautiful contrast against the bright, white calcite matrix. The spinel crystal itself measures just over 1cm on the diagonal.
Featured Item: Grossular (var. Hessonite) garnet

Size: 14 x 11 x 9 mm overall
Comments: Cluster of lustrous, GEMMY, sharp dodectahedral Grossular garnets to 8 mm, with rich orange color and great clarity, accented with green Diopside. In perfect condition, this is a top quality thumbnail.
Golden State Gem & Mineral is a California based company which was started in 2014 through a love for gems and minerals. The founder Richard Vogl, with a background as a Geologist, has always enjoyed collecting gems and minerals. He started collecting fine mineral in the early 80s with his first serious collecting of Fluorite at the historic Felix Mine in Azusa, California and Tourmaline in Pala, California. He traded his first flat of Felix Mine Fluorite for five Benitoite thumbnails and the rest was history. Golden State Gem & Mineral once started as just a dream, but has since become a reality and finally we can share our love for gems and minerals with everyone. Most recently Richard has taken up faceting gemstones and is an accomplished gem artist, in addition to becoming a Certified Gemologist. We are a global gem and mineral dealer which offers a wide variety of fine mineral specimens and gemstones with a passionate love for fine tourmaline specimens and other pegmatite gem minerals. We also offer a wide variety of gemstones including rare faceted gemstones including Benitoite and Red Beryl. We sell at major shows such as The Tucson Gem and Mineral show, The Denver Gem and Mineral Show, and The West Coast Gem & Mineral Show, along with the internet.

Who is this phantom collector you wonder? Well please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a graduate of geosciences from Princeton university and I’ve been a collector of fossils and minerals since I was a kid. My specialty in my studies is mass extinctions.I tend to focus on specific fossils as I come into them in my travels. For example; my senior thesis was on Moroccan Devonian environments, and so I suddenly have a massive Moroccan Devonian Trilobite collection. Or another time I interned in Colorado, and eventually ended up with a collection of Colorado minerals and fossils. Anyway, fossil and mineral collecting is my hobby, and this site is here to share some of the more interesting pieces with people who are interested in seeing them.

It all began in 1952, when my grandfather Vaner Tangborn opened Tangborns’ Rock Shop, eight miles south of Bemidji, Minnesota on Highway 71. His was an immense, one-man operation that he ran until 1991, shortly before his death at age 96. He traded, sold, collected, and sometimes gave away amazing amounts of rocks, crystals, and gems. He tumbled, polished, and sawed rocks, and made them into jewelry. He made over 1500 rock tables and shipped them all over the world. Some of his interests were geology, science, Einstein’s theories, the age and origins of the universe, and the geologic forces that brought his rocks and fossils into existence. He was a patient teacher to young children, helping them with their rock collections and teaching them to use lapidary equipment. Thousands of people passed through his shop. He also found time to perform music, serve on local boards, and maintained a lifelong interest in politics.
