Size: 2 x 2.5 x 3.5 cm – Miniature
Item #: 47781
Comments: Quartz showing abundant leaf Gold with the largest 5mm across. The Gold, as in all of these specimens, is amazingly bright and shiny.By the way these specimens are recently mined.
Featured Item: Ruby var. Corundum on matrix
Location: Zazafotsy Quarry, Ambahatraso, Amboarohy, Ihosy Area,Horombe Region, Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar
Size: 5.0 x 3.5 x 5.0 – Largest crystal in cm: 1.9
Item #: TUC0802
Comments: I was really excited about finding this exceptional specimen at the Tucson show. From a very recent mining, I was told not many were extracted. This perfect, gorgeous, doubly terminated, lustrous Ruby crystal sits on a matrix of Rhodolite Garnet, and Mica Phlogopite. You can see the variations in the different color zones of violet/purple/mauve hues throughout the crystal, giving this top shelf gem layers of pronounced beauty. Poised majestically on the matrix, this is one of my favorite acquisitions from the show, and the best of this species that I saw!
I have been collecting since 1966 – starting at the ripe old age of six! I originally collected pyrites and Herkimer diamonds as I lived in Western New York until I was 13. Now, I collect old German and Italian specimens and rare faceted gemstones. You can see some pictures of my collection in my photo gallery. In addition to my collecting experience, I have a Graduate Gemologist degree from the GIA.My philosophy is simple. I endeavour to offer quality specimens in all price ranges. I try to keep my prices as reasonable as possible. My descriptions, locality information, and photos are as accurate as I can make them. And I value customer service – I will try to answer all inquiries as quickly as possible, whether about my offerings or about mineral collecting and gemmology in general.
Featured Item: Spodumene on Quartz
Location: Mawi Pegmatite, Laghman Province, Afghanistan
Size: 9.3 x 7.8 x 6.1 cm
Item #: Afg009
Comments: Attractive specimen of transparent, light green spodumene crystals on quartz. The green color of the spodumene is natural – I have had this specimen for many years and the color has not faded. The spodumene crystals measure to 3.3 cm and are undamaged; one has a sharp chisel termination while the other has a more complex, slightly etched termination. Some bruising to the quartz crystals.
Featured Item: bi-colored Beryl (Aqua-Morganite)
Location: Skardu, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan
Size: 6.4 cm by 4.7 cm by 4.5 cm in total size.
Item #: MIN#Denver2017-11
Comments:Gorgeous and unusually rich example of bi-colored Beryl (Aqua-Morganite)!
A sharp, single crystal specimen of Beryl showing gemmy blue Aquamarine atop rich Morganite, which is a color pattern not often seen. This specimen, from a small find in early 2014, is a superb miniature. The blue zone is over 1 cm thick, and is no “thin line” of color from one angle as can sometimes happen. This is simply a bold and dramatic color! The pink body on this piece is especially rich. The crystal is nearly complete all around, with only some matrix contact irregularity on the back. The termination is a perfect hexagonal right out of a textbook. Stunningly beautiful!

Featured Item: Azurite
Location: Milpillas Mine, Sonora, Mexico
Size: 3.9 x 3.3 x 2.5 cm
Weight: 6.0 oz
Item No#: ROAZ408
Comments: A brilliant specimen from the new find of Azurite in northern Mexico. This is a very high-quality specimen that features numerous highly lustrous Azurite crystals arranged into the gracefully balanced formation pictured. In excellent condition.
Featured Item: Perfect Double-Terminated Aquamarine & Albite
Location: Shigar Valley, Pakistan
Size: 5.4 x 6.7 x 4.2cm
Item #: DCO17-AQUALB
Comments: This specimen represents the rarest of aquamarine combos from Pakistan. Here we have an absolutely perfect, double-terminated, damage-free, unrepaired, blue aquamarine crystal that is 6.7cm long and 2cm wide. The luster and clarity is that of glass, and the color is as perfect as it gets for Pakistani aquamarine! The photos really don’t do this piece justice, and in person this is a major “Wow!” specimen. Both ends of the aquamarine are terminated, and the color is just breathtaking!
This represents a fraction of the top 1% of aquamarine specimens that come from Shigar Valley, and in a good year of mining only a handful of specimens of this quality are found. In some years they don’t find anything this good. The size, color, condition and aesthetics make this an absolue top collector-grade specimen. It comes with a custom black acrylic Sunnywood base, however, the specimen will stand up on its own without the base as well.
Featured Item: Calcite (pseudo Ulexite) with Ulexite
Location: U.S. Borax Mine, Kramer Borate deposit, Boron, Kramer District, Kern Co., California, USA
Size: 32 x 25 x 20 mm overall
Comments: A lustrous, blocky crystal of yellow Calcite, with pronounced striations and tiny acicular features on its surface, has grown atop, engulfed and is replacing fibrous white Ulexite. This is an excellent and rare example of partial replacement of Ulexite by Calcite from Boron.
Golden State Gem & Mineral is a California based company which was started in 2014 through a love for gems and minerals. The founder Richard Vogl, with a background as a Geologist, has always enjoyed collecting gems and minerals. He started collecting fine mineral in the early 80s with his first serious collecting of Fluorite at the historic Felix Mine in Azusa, California and Tourmaline in Pala, California. He traded his first flat of Felix Mine Fluorite for five Benitoite thumbnails and the rest was history. Golden State Gem & Mineral once started as just a dream, but has since become a reality and finally we can share our love for gems and minerals with everyone. Most recently Richard has taken up faceting gemstones and is an accomplished gem artist, in addition to becoming a Certified Gemologist. We are a global gem and mineral dealer which offers a wide variety of fine mineral specimens and gemstones with a passionate love for fine tourmaline specimens and other pegmatite gem minerals. We also offer a wide variety of gemstones including rare faceted gemstones including Benitoite and Red Beryl. We sell at major shows such as The Tucson Gem and Mineral show, The Denver Gem and Mineral Show, and The West Coast Gem & Mineral Show, along with the internet.
Featured Item: Beryl Variety Emerald
Location: Muzo Columbia
Size: Overall piece measure 4.3 x 3.6 x 3.7 cm
Comments: Beautiful bright green larger emerald crystal with smaller crystal on limestone, calcite and minor pyrite matrix. The large terminated crystal measures 2.8 cm long by 1.23 cm wide.
Featured Item: Wulfenite Crystals on Calcite
Location: Aurora Mine, Cuchillo Parado, Chihuahua, Mexico
Size: 9.8 x 6.5 x 5.7 cm
Comments: A rare, old-time specimen from the well-known but small Aurora mine. Striking, lustrous, rust-red, bi-pyramidal Wulfenite crystals to 1.3 cm aesthetically populate a matrix of white Calcite crystals. To me, the most striking feature is the almost metallic luster of the Wulfies, unusual and eye-catching. This is older material, and is seldom available now.

Who is this phantom collector you wonder? Well please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a graduate of geosciences from Princeton university and I’ve been a collector of fossils and minerals since I was a kid. My specialty in my studies is mass extinctions.I tend to focus on specific fossils as I come into them in my travels. For example; my senior thesis was on Moroccan Devonian environments, and so I suddenly have a massive Moroccan Devonian Trilobite collection. Or another time I interned in Colorado, and eventually ended up with a collection of Colorado minerals and fossils. Anyway, fossil and mineral collecting is my hobby, and this site is here to share some of the more interesting pieces with people who are interested in seeing them.

It all began in 1952, when my grandfather Vaner Tangborn opened Tangborns’ Rock Shop, eight miles south of Bemidji, Minnesota on Highway 71. His was an immense, one-man operation that he ran until 1991, shortly before his death at age 96. He traded, sold, collected, and sometimes gave away amazing amounts of rocks, crystals, and gems. He tumbled, polished, and sawed rocks, and made them into jewelry. He made over 1500 rock tables and shipped them all over the world. Some of his interests were geology, science, Einstein’s theories, the age and origins of the universe, and the geologic forces that brought his rocks and fossils into existence. He was a patient teacher to young children, helping them with their rock collections and teaching them to use lapidary equipment. Thousands of people passed through his shop. He also found time to perform music, serve on local boards, and maintained a lifelong interest in politics.
