Featured Item: Beryl var. Morganite on Albite var. Cleavelandite
Location: Pech, Kunar Province,Afghanistan
Size: Dimensions in cm: 8.0 x 8.0 x 7.0 – Crystal size in cm: 5.0 x 2.7 x 3.5
Item #: DEN08MOR
Comments: This is truly one of the finer examples of Morganite on Cleavelandite that I have seen at any of the recent mineral shows, or on the Internet for that matter. I am very proud to offer this outstanding specimen for sale here. Although this one of a kind beauty already looked mighty fine when I first acquired it, so that it may “shine” to its full potential, I had it professionally trimmed and cleaned to perfection. Finally, the finishing touch was a custom mineral base made to order so it could poise in its full glory!
Now, worthy of looking pretty in any museum, this magnificent treasure is ready to be displayed in the cabinet of any discerning collector! I acquired this beauty from a colleague who is well established in the world of mineral collecting, and it is formerly from the collection of the renowned mineral collector Dr. Eugene Meieran. Cradled real pretty on a matrix of snow white blades of crystallized Cleavelandite, this striking hexagonal Morganite crystal by itself measures in at: 5 cm. high; 2.7 cm wide; and 3.5 cm deep! Gorgeous pink color with perfect facets, are accented by the fact that it is quite gemmy — with super clear transparency.
The Morganite crystal itself refracts light wildly while photographing, hence the white glowing spots as seen in the photographs. You can actually see the Cleavelandite matrix behind the crystal. And please believe me when I say that this specimen is that much better viewing in person! Still, I have gone to great lengths in photographing to give you the best representations possible. The overall crystal is perfectly faceted throughout on all sides with the exception of just the very top/backside which has more of a scalloped face — but this is not damage (please see lower left photo). There is minor “etching” on the front facet (not at all evident without catching the light at the perfect angle), which is not detracting while it displays beautifully in its custom display base.
Featured Item: Quartz (faden)
Location: Aiguille des Amèthystes, Glacier d’Argentière, Mont Blanc Massif (Haute Savoie, France)
Item #: WALPS-12/55
Comments: A matrixless string of highly lustrous transparent quartz crystals of very light smoky color forming a nice “faden” structure. The main crystal in the structure is a “left-handed” one. Contacted at bottom where it was attached to other crystals, otherwise undamaged and quite nice, better than the pictures suggest.
I have been collecting since 1966 – starting at the ripe old age of six! I originally collected pyrites and Herkimer diamonds as I lived in Western New York until I was 13. Now, I collect old German and Italian specimens and rare faceted gemstones. You can see some pictures of my collection in my photo gallery. In addition to my collecting experience, I have a Graduate Gemologist degree from the GIA.My philosophy is simple. I endeavour to offer quality specimens in all price ranges. I try to keep my prices as reasonable as possible. My descriptions, locality information, and photos are as accurate as I can make them. And I value customer service – I will try to answer all inquiries as quickly as possible, whether about my offerings or about mineral collecting and gemmology in general.

Size: 4.1 cm by 6.2 cm by 3.8 cm in total size
Item #: MIN#TUCSON2017-41
Comments: Gemmy crystals with a scattering of drusy accenting atop some tips, this specimen is pure pizzazz!I haven’t offered many South African Rhodos over the years but this one caught my eye the moment I saw it! The crystals are in excellent shape with full terminations and glassy faces that clearly show the inner gemminess of each Rhodo! The drusy accents impart a brilliant sparkle to the Rhodochrosite crystals while the dark Manganite matrix adds a deep contrast. In excellent condition with no detractions.

Golden State Gem & Mineral is a California based company which was started in 2014 through a love for gems and minerals. The founder Richard Vogl, with a background as a Geologist, has always enjoyed collecting gems and minerals. He started collecting fine mineral in the early 80s with his first serious collecting of Fluorite at the historic Felix Mine in Azusa, California and Tourmaline in Pala, California. He traded his first flat of Felix Mine Fluorite for five Benitoite thumbnails and the rest was history. Golden State Gem & Mineral once started as just a dream, but has since become a reality and finally we can share our love for gems and minerals with everyone. Most recently Richard has taken up faceting gemstones and is an accomplished gem artist, in addition to becoming a Certified Gemologist. We are a global gem and mineral dealer which offers a wide variety of fine mineral specimens and gemstones with a passionate love for fine tourmaline specimens and other pegmatite gem minerals. We also offer a wide variety of gemstones including rare faceted gemstones including Benitoite and Red Beryl. We sell at major shows such as The Tucson Gem and Mineral show, The Denver Gem and Mineral Show, and The West Coast Gem & Mineral Show, along with the internet.

Who is this phantom collector you wonder? Well please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a graduate of geosciences from Princeton university and I’ve been a collector of fossils and minerals since I was a kid. My specialty in my studies is mass extinctions.I tend to focus on specific fossils as I come into them in my travels. For example; my senior thesis was on Moroccan Devonian environments, and so I suddenly have a massive Moroccan Devonian Trilobite collection. Or another time I interned in Colorado, and eventually ended up with a collection of Colorado minerals and fossils. Anyway, fossil and mineral collecting is my hobby, and this site is here to share some of the more interesting pieces with people who are interested in seeing them.

It all began in 1952, when my grandfather Vaner Tangborn opened Tangborns’ Rock Shop, eight miles south of Bemidji, Minnesota on Highway 71. His was an immense, one-man operation that he ran until 1991, shortly before his death at age 96. He traded, sold, collected, and sometimes gave away amazing amounts of rocks, crystals, and gems. He tumbled, polished, and sawed rocks, and made them into jewelry. He made over 1500 rock tables and shipped them all over the world. Some of his interests were geology, science, Einstein’s theories, the age and origins of the universe, and the geologic forces that brought his rocks and fossils into existence. He was a patient teacher to young children, helping them with their rock collections and teaching them to use lapidary equipment. Thousands of people passed through his shop. He also found time to perform music, serve on local boards, and maintained a lifelong interest in politics.
