Featured Item: Fluorite & Sphalerite
Location: Elmwood Mine, Smith County, near Carthage, Tennessee, USA
Size: 5.0 x 4.3 x 3.0 – Largest crystal in cm: 3.5 across
Item #: ELM01
Comments: Very beautiful specimen of Fluorite and Sphalerite, consisting of a good sized cube of vividly colored purple Fluorite cube set on crystallized, reddish/brown Sphalerite matrix. The lustrous, translucent, Fluorite crystal has very nice form, with typical stepped cubic faces (see top left photo). You can also see in the photos above that there is very nice form in the crystal, as well as the overall composition of crystal as it sits on the matrix. There is a cleave on the very bottom backside of the Fluorite, where it was removed from its matrix rock (this is very typical for Elmwood specimens). It is not at all noticeable as the specimen is viewed from all sides. Displays very well on its own, and just “glitters” throughout! A very aesthetic, large miniature specimen, from a very classic U.S. locale.
I have been collecting since 1966 – starting at the ripe old age of six! I originally collected pyrites and Herkimer diamonds as I lived in Western New York until I was 13. Now, I collect old German and Italian specimens and rare faceted gemstones. You can see some pictures of my collection in my photo gallery. In addition to my collecting experience, I have a Graduate Gemologist degree from the GIA.My philosophy is simple. I endeavour to offer quality specimens in all price ranges. I try to keep my prices as reasonable as possible. My descriptions, locality information, and photos are as accurate as I can make them. And I value customer service – I will try to answer all inquiries as quickly as possible, whether about my offerings or about mineral collecting and gemmology in general.
Featured Item: Quartz var. Smoky
Location: Smoky Mountain Crystal Mine, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, USA
Size: 3.7 x 2.2 x 2.0 cm
Item #: PaQz004
Comments: In the summer of 2015, I heard about terrific smoky quartzes being mined in Pennsylvania by Kelly Hilmer. I met Kelly at a small local show and then visited her to see the quartz, which were exceptionally lustrous and gemmy. I purchased a lot of superb miniature and small cabinet specimens, which were very popular at the Denver and Tucson shows and written about in the Mineralogical Record. I have a few specimens left and have placed them on the web.
This is an excellent miniature from the find, with water-clear, deep smoky gem crystals measuring to 2.5 cm. The luster is incredible and the crystals are undamaged, except for two nicks on the backside of the left and rightmost crystals. The cluster has an incredible resemblance to a duck.

Featured Item: Phantom Fluorite on Calcite Vug
Location: Minerva #1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin Co., Illinois
Size: 10.1 x 6.0 x 6.1cm
Item #: TZ18-FLUVUG
Comments: The aesthetics of this specimen are really crazy! Not only are there over 11 glassy phantom fluorite cubes, but they’re on top of a really interesting calcite cave. The calcite forms a small cave or vug with openings that you can see right through. It’s hard to really sense the 3D nature of the piece in a 2D photo, but there’s a lot going on in there. The fluorite crystals are scattered across the top of the calcite cave, and the largest crystal is just under 2cm wide. The fluorite has strong phantoms with a purple core and clear, light, blue outer zone. The surface has a very glassy luster. This is really a unique piece! The specimen comes with a labeled acrylic display base.

Golden State Gem & Mineral is a California based company which was started in 2014 through a love for gems and minerals. The founder Richard Vogl, with a background as a Geologist, has always enjoyed collecting gems and minerals. He started collecting fine mineral in the early 80s with his first serious collecting of Fluorite at the historic Felix Mine in Azusa, California and Tourmaline in Pala, California. He traded his first flat of Felix Mine Fluorite for five Benitoite thumbnails and the rest was history. Golden State Gem & Mineral once started as just a dream, but has since become a reality and finally we can share our love for gems and minerals with everyone. Most recently Richard has taken up faceting gemstones and is an accomplished gem artist, in addition to becoming a Certified Gemologist. We are a global gem and mineral dealer which offers a wide variety of fine mineral specimens and gemstones with a passionate love for fine tourmaline specimens and other pegmatite gem minerals. We also offer a wide variety of gemstones including rare faceted gemstones including Benitoite and Red Beryl. We sell at major shows such as The Tucson Gem and Mineral show, The Denver Gem and Mineral Show, and The West Coast Gem & Mineral Show, along with the internet.

Who is this phantom collector you wonder? Well please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a graduate of geosciences from Princeton university and I’ve been a collector of fossils and minerals since I was a kid. My specialty in my studies is mass extinctions.I tend to focus on specific fossils as I come into them in my travels. For example; my senior thesis was on Moroccan Devonian environments, and so I suddenly have a massive Moroccan Devonian Trilobite collection. Or another time I interned in Colorado, and eventually ended up with a collection of Colorado minerals and fossils. Anyway, fossil and mineral collecting is my hobby, and this site is here to share some of the more interesting pieces with people who are interested in seeing them.

It all began in 1952, when my grandfather Vaner Tangborn opened Tangborns’ Rock Shop, eight miles south of Bemidji, Minnesota on Highway 71. His was an immense, one-man operation that he ran until 1991, shortly before his death at age 96. He traded, sold, collected, and sometimes gave away amazing amounts of rocks, crystals, and gems. He tumbled, polished, and sawed rocks, and made them into jewelry. He made over 1500 rock tables and shipped them all over the world. Some of his interests were geology, science, Einstein’s theories, the age and origins of the universe, and the geologic forces that brought his rocks and fossils into existence. He was a patient teacher to young children, helping them with their rock collections and teaching them to use lapidary equipment. Thousands of people passed through his shop. He also found time to perform music, serve on local boards, and maintained a lifelong interest in politics.
