Tsumeb Fine Minerals
Rudolf grew up in a mineral collecting family and got captivated by the beauty of minerals at an early age. Especially the truly outstanding Alpine Mineral Collection of his father Anton Watzl Sen. (also an renowned minerals photographer!) posed an ideal and encouragement for further development. Rudolfs first collection mainly consisted of self-collected specimens from the Austrian Alp, great iron roses to be some of its most striking. To this day it grew to a impressive collection of finest minerals from the worlds best localities.
Featured Item: Aquamarine on Feldspar
Location: Shigar valley, Skardu District, Baltistan, Northern Areas, Pakistan
Size: 8.2 x 5.3 x 5.3 cm
Item #: RK158
Comments: This is one of those fantastically rare pieces where absolutely everything comes together. The aquamarine impresses with its saturated blue color, an almost magical surface structure with highest luster and a lovely modified termination. The crystal is completely free of internal cracks and I will not even start writing about flaws as there are none. Even the bottom of this spectacular piece is healed and without damage. The aquamarine perfectly sits on a snow-white feldspar matrix, stark color contrast at its best! We have seen so many lower and medium class aquamarine comming from Pakistan over the years that it is invigorating to get such a calibre from a more recent find in 2014. Absolutely breathtaking and one of a kind!
Featured Item: Brazilianite with Microcline

Comments: This specimen of brazilianite is mostly gemmy and aesthetically compacted into a 2.3 x 2.3 cm thumbnail. The V-shaped formation is the most interesting feature of this specimen, with lots of eye appeal for a thumb.
Featured Item: Topaz

Size: 4.9 x 4.2 x 3.9 cm
Item #: top2268
Comments: A prize-winning miniature! A perfectly formed terminated topaz crystal, water-clear light-sherry color sits on white clevelandite matrix.

Location: New York, USA
Size: 8.9″ x 5.6″ x 1.4″
Item #: EB0214QHERK5
Comments: This rainbow-filled, brilliant HERKIMER DIAMOND (QUARTZ) crystal cluster came out of the Ace of Diamonds Mine, Middleville, Herkimer Co., New York. I picked out this highly aesthetic cluster out in Tucson, from the table of the owner/miner of the Ace. He uses heavy equipment, from excavators to a backhoe with a hydraulic rock breaker attachment, to mine at the Ace. This mine (and its neighbor a few yards to the south) produce what some people consider to be the most desirable, clearest, most cleanly crystallized Herkimer Diamonds and Herkimer clusters in the world. This piece is an especially choice example of the crystals from this world famous mine, and will be a great addition to most any collection. Crystal groups of this size and complexity are almost always found in singles and groups in the pockets. That means they must be reconstructed after collecting and cleaning by fitting the growth planes of the ends of the crystals together into their original positions. This is a time consuming and tedious process, but when the original position is found, they go back together so perfectly that there is no question about the authenticity of the fit. After each piece is glued in place, and the search resumes for the next perfect fit.
Location: Tsumeb, Namibia
Size: Thumbnail, 2.1 x 1.9 x 1.4 cm
Item #: RUT273
Comments: A HUGE , sharp crystal of deep blue Scorodite with sharp edges and superb luster. For this style in particular, teh crystal is superb. The single crystal is completely exposed on front and ensconced in matrix which covers the back side but leaves the tip freestanding. This is a MAJOR Tsumeb thumbnail specimen; and a major scorodite from any locality as well! Purchased from the Zweibels in 1976.

The notion of mounted minerals began in the fall of 1984 when Bill and Elsie Stone, owners of the Sunnywood Collection wanted to display several large specimens from their mineral collection in the living room. The specimens were large enough that they might damage the furniture. They decided to construct a custom base out of hardwood to hold the specimens in a stable but artistic position. From the first mounted specimens came The Sunnywood Collection, providing museum quality mineral and fossil specimens from world-wide localities and carvings from Brazil. All specimens from The Sunnywood Collection are mounted on either exotic or domestic hardwoods or acrylic bases.

In the past several years I have seen too many new dealers enter the market who know little to nothing about crystallography, petrology, chemistry or any of the basic fundamentals of mineralogy. At shows more than half the dealers simply put rocks out on a table or shelf with no pricing, no identification, or locality information. I have seen other dealers continue to push specimens to seemingly arbitrary pricing levels with the belief that there is always someone out there who will think that a high price is equal to high quality. This is an unhealthy trend in this hobby and one that needs to be addressed in some way by the mineral collecting community.I have been a mineral collector since the mid 1970s and have seen the pricing for minerals expand at a rate that is unsupportable over the long term. My basic philosophy for pricing specimens is to ensure that when you open the box you feel as though you have received value for your purchase.
