Tsumeb Fine Minerals
Rudolf grew up in a mineral collecting family and got captivated by the beauty of minerals at an early age. Especially the truly outstanding Alpine Mineral Collection of his father Anton Watzl Sen. (also an renowned minerals photographer!) posed an ideal and encouragement for further development. Rudolfs first collection mainly consisted of self-collected specimens from the Austrian Alp, great iron roses to be some of its most striking. To this day it grew to a impressive collection of finest minerals from the worlds best localities.
Featured Item: Rubellite
Location: Cruzeiro mine, São José da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size: 7.6 x 5.3 x 4.3 cm
Item #: VA4
Comments: Quality and aesthetics of this rubellite are absolutely stunning! The crystal shows most vivid raspberry-red color which is especially intensive at the flat termination, where the crystal is gemmy. The body of this specimen is evenly studded with lavender lepidolite and white cleavelandite which is just beautiful on such a vibrant, lustrous and thick crystal. There is virtually no damage here, even the backside is complete and similarly impressive. Highly attracitve specimen of great hand-size and unusually fine developed aesthetics!
Featured Item: Red Beryl
Location: Violet Claims, Wah Wah Mts., Beaver Co., Utah
Size: 8.5 x 5 cm
Item #: S18132
Comments: The only source for quality crystals of red beryl over the years is from the Violet Claims lower pit in Utah. This specimen came from that production and mining claim owner Rex Harris, with his faded label. This intense violet-red crystal is without issues and devoid of the typical rhyolite inclusions and internal fractures that affect value. A quality red beryl will always be valued for its color.
Featured Item: Corundum variety Ruby
Location: Jegdalek, Surobi District, Kabul Province, Afghanistan
Size: 3.6 x 3 x 3.5 cm
Item #: rby3293
Comments: A 1.5 cm. Ruby crystal in white marble matrix. The crystal has that great rich, well, Ruby-red color.
Our company principals have two generations of experience in collecting, dealing, and appraising fine mineral specimens found in Spain and overseas. Apart from offering some of the world’s best fine mineral specimens to the natural art collector, the company is proud to continue its support to one of the best private mineral collections of Spain, the Fernandez Buelga Natural Art Collection.
Our selection of fine minerals
The selection of our fine mineral specimens is principally based on aesthetics, with parameters like color, balance or crystal quality of paramount importance for us. Secondly, because we can not hide our scientific background, we very much enjoy offering to our customers rare localities, weird crystallizations and other mineralogical oddities. But our eyes are always looking for the highest beauty.
As mineral collecting moves from an uncommon hobby to an emerging cultural asset class, Spanish Minerals commits to offer our clients, not only fine mineral specimens, but also professional advice for the novice as well as the experienced natural art collector.

Size: 7.0 x 4.0 x 3.5 cm

Comments: Killer classic German specimen of intense amber-honney color sharp fluorite cubic crystals, with incredible phantoms. Top luster. Very showy.
Featured Item: Tourmaline v. Indicolite, Rubellite
Location: Capelinha Mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size: 8.5cm Indicolite x 7.25cm Rubellite
Comments: This specimen was part of a small pocket opened in the spring of 2013. There were five larger crystal in the pocket; three have the same coronation as this lovely specimen. What is particularly interesting about this piece is the crystalized rubellite that that is in such great balance with the indicolite crystal. We love that you can see the crystal habit of the rubellite. Of course, the star is the fine multicolored indicolite. The photo shows you the lovely color transition of the indicolite from dark blue to lighter blue to green and a return to a series of blue. It’s beautifully set off with the vibrant pink of the rubellite. It’s a fine specimen. The indicolite has one repair.

Location: Ruby Violet claims, Wah Wah Mts, Beaver Co., Utah, USA
Size: 0.6″ x 0.4″ x 0.3″
Item #: GH0815BRED4
Comments: This is an extremely sharp and very lovely crystal of red beryl (also known as bixbite or red emerald) from the Ruby Violet claim in Utah – the only place in the world these rare crystals have been found. Red beryl is said to be 1,000 times rarer than emerald. This very nicely crystallized example has great magenta-crimson color, glassy luster, and a pristine termination. Crystals of this unusually large size – 15 carats! – are very hard to find now since the mine closed a decade ago. And the quality on his piece is superb, too. The top half has a rich red color, while the bottom half has an unusual purple-violet color – something I have never seen before.
Location: Tsumeb, Namibia
Size: Small Cabinet, 5.2 x 4.4 x 2.3 cm
Item #: RUTX1
Comments: Wow! This is a stunning combination piece featuring an unaltered azurite crystal perched like a cowboy on a bucking primary malachite matrix! The azurite measures 3 x 2.25 x 1 cm and is doubly-terminated, since you can see the bottom peek out. The azurite has ELECTRIC color and lustre to it, and really jumps out at you. it has a phenomenal, lustrous, broad termination that is most unusual. See closeup photo for that. Also, it is notable that the azurite is still an azurite…most Tsumeb azurites in association with malachite have themselves altered at least partially to malachite but this remains 99% azurite with just small spots of alteration having begun in pocket. A stellar, 3-dimensional piece of a common species, common association eve, but in a uniquely aesthetic arrangement.

The notion of mounted minerals began in the fall of 1984 when Bill and Elsie Stone, owners of the Sunnywood Collection wanted to display several large specimens from their mineral collection in the living room. The specimens were large enough that they might damage the furniture. They decided to construct a custom base out of hardwood to hold the specimens in a stable but artistic position. From the first mounted specimens came The Sunnywood Collection, providing museum quality mineral and fossil specimens from world-wide localities and carvings from Brazil. All specimens from The Sunnywood Collection are mounted on either exotic or domestic hardwoods or acrylic bases.

In the past several years I have seen too many new dealers enter the market who know little to nothing about crystallography, petrology, chemistry or any of the basic fundamentals of mineralogy. At shows more than half the dealers simply put rocks out on a table or shelf with no pricing, no identification, or locality information. I have seen other dealers continue to push specimens to seemingly arbitrary pricing levels with the belief that there is always someone out there who will think that a high price is equal to high quality. This is an unhealthy trend in this hobby and one that needs to be addressed in some way by the mineral collecting community.I have been a mineral collector since the mid 1970s and have seen the pricing for minerals expand at a rate that is unsupportable over the long term. My basic philosophy for pricing specimens is to ensure that when you open the box you feel as though you have received value for your purchase.
