Gems from Pegmatite Deposits

The Hogg Mine and other pegmatite deposits in Georgia were on important sources of mica for industrial and electronics applications. They were later developed as possible sources of beryllium from beryle. Today beryl, quartz, and even schorl (tourmaline group) are collected and cut and polished gems.

Amethyst and Smoky Quartz

In past that Chariles Creek and nearby area in Towns COunty, Georgia produced many exceptional maethyst and smoky quartz crystals. These locations are now lost or off limits to collecting. Today Jacksons Crossroads in Wilkes County, Georgia still produces fine gem and specimen amethyst.
