10. The Rockhound's Guide to Arizona Written by: Gerry Blair
Reviewed by Justin ZzyzxThe Rockhound's Guide to Arizona is an odd book and truthfully, kind of a tease. The book features some truly fantastic locations, but that is part of the problem. Many of the locations that are listed, complete with maps, are completely closed off. Heck, they were closed off well before this book went to print. It's like the author is just ASKING someone to do something stupid. I mean really, private claims and national parks...you want to get me arrested, don't you Mr. Blair? While this was printed over 10 years ago, I'm sure the people leasing the 79 mine didn't want a bunch of agate lickers poking around there, or the magma mine for that matter.
I've been to more than a couple site in this book that have been closed off now and the locations that might possibly still be open are the typical agate/jasper/cutting rough matter.
If you are looking for a guide that will either show you maps to places you really shouldn't be, or a guide to finding some cutting rough, this is a good addition to your collection. But if you are not trying to build a complete library of field guides, you can safely skip this one.
Not nearly the best field guide to Arizona, this guide still has information that many people wouldn't want you to know.
