Comments: Undamaged pair of crystals from a find of perhaps 5 years ago. Like most fromt his find, the surface has a frosted appearance in most areas. But don't let that fool you as the inside of the crystal is entirely gem quality, facet grade top to bottom. Undamaged.

Middle Earth Minerals

Middle Earth Minerals was born of my passion for rocks, so it naturally reflects the minerals that appeal to me. I love mineral specimens that are out-of-the-ordinary: rare species, unusual crystal habits, pseudomorphs, bizarre twinning, uncommon mineral associations, classic and unusual localities, old and historically significant specimens, radioactives, fluorescents, tenebresecents, phosphorescents, and minerals with inclusions, as well as simply outstanding display specimens.

Every mineral has a story to tell, lending extra depth to the experience of owning it. I think you will find many minerals to enhance your collection when you visit my website.

Featured Item: Copper

Mineral Classics Featured Item

Location: Corocoro District, Pacajes Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia

Size: 9.7 x 9.5 x 1.2cm

Item #: BOL711B04

Comments: A very attractive "locality" specimen, and a surprise discovery from early 2011. These are the first Copper "sheets" that I have seen from Corocoro, and according to the locals, there were very few found. Most people are familiar with the Copper pseudomorphs after Aragonite from this locality, but to find non-pseudomorphic, native Copper is rather rare in my experience. This aesthetic, branching, "sheet" of Copper is a great display specimen from this historic locality. On the micro level the piece displays very unusual "wormholes" that gives the piece an amazingly organic appearance. It truly resembles some kind of plant life, i.e., a group of leaves or even a group of fire coral! Very unusual, and certainly out of the ordinary for Copper in general. Good Bolivian Coppers are not common on the market, and I was told that the locality was recently purchased by a Korean mining company, so collecting and obtaining specimens will become very difficult in the future.

I've been selling rocks and minerals since 1992. It started by accident. I was collecting milky quartz in Connecticut when I hit a vein that a few friends and I followed STRAIGHT DOWN for almost 20 feet (I'm not kidding). We were looking for the best piece for our collection. We wound up with thousands of nice crystals. I still have 5 good specimens from that find, but the others were the start of this business.

mineral obsession

As a 12 year old boy on a school cave excursion back in 1960, I was fascinated by the cave formations. I had never in my life seen anything so beautiful and was hard pressed to stay with the class for the duration of the cave tour.

Later in the day when we were having lunch I did a bit of fossicking around and came upon a fluorite specimen in a little stream, I spent as much time as I could grubbing round while the other kids were discussing the cricket game they were going to play later in the day. I got into trouble for being the only boy covered in mud and was ordered to empty my bulging pockets before I could get back on the bus. I managed to hide some in my shirt which didn't look too obvious because I was rather a chubby boy.

I was so entranced by this little crystal I found on that day, which I still have in my collection, that from that point on It has been my all consuming hobby and passion to collect and study mineral specimens from all over the world.

At every opportunity after that you would find me head down collecting minerals in old disused mines around England, which lead to some unbelievable finds. My first major find was blue barite and large fluorite beds from Weirdale in Cumberland UK.

Over the years I have developed an extensive knowledge of mineralogy and my passion, far from waning is still a big part of my life hence the name "Mineral Obsession."

the mineral mailbox

Like many other collectors and dealers I was exposed to minerals and other collectors at a very early age. I started collecting minerals in about the first or second grade- seriously! I was fortunate enough to know a mineral dealer, who owned a rock-shop and his name was Floyd Beamer. I frequently mowed lawns during the summer to enable my collection to grow. Floyd did alot of rock shows in those days and he would always pick me up some nice specimens for my collection. Floyd had a good eye for quality, and in those days, good specimens could be purchased for just 75 cents to a few dollers each.

In 1976 I decided that the best way to enjoy minerals was to become a dealer. This enabled me to purchase and be exposed to many more minerals. I opened a mail order business and started dealing with minerals rather successfully for about 16 years. I also had a construction business which really started taking off and I was rather forced to stop dealing in minerals at that time due to time constraints. I just recently retired from construction and decided to start dealing in minerals again. While contracting, I really missed going to the larger shows every year and above all I missed the many friends and associates I had made. Fortunately I was still able purchase minerals by mail and trading with other dealers and friends. I was able to obtain many new specimens for the inventory. I rather think I am going to really lean back and enjoy this great hobby that we all share.

The Mineralogical Record

The principal product of the Mineralogical Record Inc. is The Mineralogical Record magazine, issued six times a year. This is the most authoritative and widely respected mineral collector's journal in the world; no serious advanced collector would be without it. Over the years many newcomers to the field have learned from it the extensive information they need to go from novice to expert and to have fun in the process. Readers learn about important mineral localities old and new, about the fascinating history of mining and mineralogy, and about new mineral species being described. They see reviews of public and private collections, market reports from contemporary mineral shows, columns on special topics, and oversized special issues devoted to entire mineral-rich states and countries. And all of these articles and features are illustrated by abundant top-quality color photography of fine mineral specimens. (See the Sample Articles page for some typical examples.) Copies of the magazine are never discarded like old newspapers, but are carefully saved and collected as reference works of permanent value.

    Museum Style Bases

I would like to introduce my custom mounting service for the display of fine mineral specimens. The purpose of a custom mount is to securely hold specimens at the optimum viewing angle for maximum visual impact. The process involves making a cast of the mineral using a modern durable molding compound. This cast provides a perfectly contoured base which cradles the specimen in a very secure and stable manner. The base is hand trimmed, sanded and painted to be as inconspicuous as possible. Attention to detail at every step of the process gives my bases where seen a crisp, clean look reminiscent of the old museum mounts in the Smithsonian and contemporary mounts at the American Museum Of Natural History. I originally developed this process to display my own specimens, and am now proud to offer it as an alternative to acrylic bases.

I created this site to show some of the best specimens from my private collection, to public my trade lists of minerals with photographs and to exchange experiences with other collectors.

    Matrix India

We are one of India's oldest mineral dealers, our roots go back to 1953. At that time, we were one of the few dealers in India exporting zeolites. We have been mining since 1970, and in 1977 we mined the famous 'Poona green apophyllite' from our own quarry at the 'Pashan Hill' in Pune, India.
We have progressively mined green apophyllite, scolecite and cavansite from our own sites in Maharashtra, India and hence, we have access to the top grade, the medium and the low grade of these minerals.
Today we are a major mineral company exporting zeolites from the Deccan Traps, and various minerals from India to all corners of the world.
We attend the Tucson and the Munich Show every year.

    Mat's Minerals

As a German mineralogist I spent over 12 years (from 1988 to 2000) in Mexico, where I worked as a geologist in precious metal exploration. Currently I am living in Germany, however I travel to Mexico several times per year, sometimes because I perform a short working contract, but my principal interest is the search of mineral specimens.
Most of the minerals I offer have been purchased directly from the mine personnel, but from time to time I also have the possibility to collect minerals by myself. Although there exist uncountable possibilities to collect minerals in the field or in abandoned mining districts, over 80% of the top quality mineral specimens from Mexico are recovered from active mines. Unfortunately many mines have closed or have reduced their production in the last few years due to extremely low metal prices in the world market, consequently it is getting more and more difficult to find this high quality. Nevertheless I will continue with my efforts in exploring Mexico for the finest mineral specimens. You will find major updates after each Mexico trip and generally the new top specimens appear first on this web page, before I offer them for sale in the mineral shows. I hope you enjoy my mineral galleries.
