Comments: This is one of the Best single gem crystals from the new Aquamarine find. This specimen was found during June of 2009, and came from the "Summer Pocket" The specimen consists of one huge single beryl crystal (double terminated) attached to another double terminated crystal on the back. There is a trace amount of schorl and microcline associated with this specimen, but considerably less than the newer pockets found this past fall. This specimen has microscopic chipping, but in no way does it detract from the outstanding aesthetics, or the overall value of the piece.

Comments: Tanzanite, the highly coveted gemmy blue variety of Zoisite, is very rarely available as a matrix specimen. Therefore, this piece requires some explanation. The featured 2 cm crystal is perfect, a highly lustrous, sharply terminated, single crystal of the best violet-blue color. There are numerous internal veils and tiny fractures which rescued it from the gem market. The specimen is clumsily repaired with Graphite grains unnaturally mostly covering the glue. It may have been just assembled, but more likely, the crystal was removed from the matrix, heated to bring out the color, then replaced and concealed with Graphite, a species which naturally occurs in association. The matrix is certainly from the area as it contains some fractured Zoisite crystals, as shown. It is a unique piece which suffers from the repair, but offers an otherwise unavailable cabinet-sized matrix specimen.

Minerals and geology form the bedrock of our lives. For many years we have sifted through Poland, Europe and, indeed, the whole world, in search of interesting geological phenomena, such as volcanoes and glaciers. The discovery of minerals is of prime importance to us.Last year was particularly active, with voyages to the Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Morocco, India, Russia, Turkey, Mongolia, China, Tajikistan and Madagascar. The resulting science articles, exhibitions and specimens are the provenance of our Geological Society, known as “Spirifer”. Between voyages for Spirifer, we are students passionate about our work. Spirifer is a non-profit organization based solely on volunteerism. Its main purpose is Earth science education. We compose and publish the only periodical in Poland for minerals collectors; it is called “Otoczak” (www.spirifer.most.org.pl/otoczak/). We also organize minerals exchanges, exhibitions, shows (www.mineraly.waw.pl), as well as provide organized weekly educational lessons to children (www.pracownia.spirifer.org).
Our organization receives no government funding and is completely self-supporting. An important source of that support is the selling of specimens from our voyages.

I started this all about 15 years ago. A couple buddies were rockers and I was just fascinated by what they were finding. amethyst, tourmaline, topaz, aquamarine, quartz crystal and .... So I started bugging them to let me collect. One day one could not go so I was invited along. I am not sure if it was a test but we hiked up 2 mountains and covered 8 plus miles.( thought I was gonna die!). But we went to an old Amethyst mine and I found some ~!!!!!!!! Needless to say I was hooked.

Comments: Lovely specimen consisting of numerous .6 cm crystals of Mimetite arranged in radial sprays. All the crystals have a very nice yellow color and absolutely superb luster. Naturally, the centers of sprays are contacted by their very nature. This is very aesthetic, and has to be seen to be really appreciated! It is possibly a pseudomorph after a rotund cerussite twin, as this habit of mimetite is associated with that well-known replacement at Tsumeb. Purchased from the Zweibels in 1976 .

The notion of mounted minerals began in the fall of 1984 when Bill and Elsie Stone, owners of the Sunnywood Collection wanted to display several large specimens from their mineral collection in the living room. The specimens were large enough that they might damage the furniture. They decided to construct a custom base out of hardwood to hold the specimens in a stable but artistic position. From the first mounted specimens came The Sunnywood Collection, providing museum quality mineral and fossil specimens from world-wide localities and carvings from Brazil. All specimens from The Sunnywood Collection are mounted on either exotic or domestic hardwoods or acrylic bases.

In the past several years I have seen too many new dealers enter the market who know little to nothing about crystallography, petrology, chemistry or any of the basic fundamentals of mineralogy. At shows more than half the dealers simply put rocks out on a table or shelf with no pricing, no identification, or locality information. I have seen other dealers continue to push specimens to seemingly arbitrary pricing levels with the belief that there is always someone out there who will think that a high price is equal to high quality. This is an unhealthy trend in this hobby and one that needs to be addressed in some way by the mineral collecting community.
I have been a mineral collector since the mid 1970s and have seen the pricing for minerals expand at a rate that is unsupportable over the long term. My basic philosophy for pricing specimens is to ensure that when you open the box you feel as though you have received value for your purchase.
