This is the home page of Oregon Rockhounds Online. Ore-Rock-On was founded by Tim Fisher (me) on Sunday, June 4, 1995, whilst putting off lots of yardwork which I had to do. The organization's membership immediately swelled to four to include my wife, Tonya, and my kids, Tad and Lauren. In 1964 a man named Ted moved to Bremerton...In 1965 he started faceting. Then, in 1968, Ted and Bottema started Alpha Faceting Supply out of his home selling faceting rough. Soon a demand for tools and equipment was realized and a catalog of supplies was put together.
As the business grew, Ted left Westinghouse in August of 1970 to run Alpha full time. Five years after starting it, Alpha outgrew his home and moved to a new location in 1973.
Ted retired in September of 1991 at 70 years of age and sold the business to Tom Orme and Mayur Sheth who have expanded the business to include our office in India.
Over the years we've added thousands of products to our inventory and thanks to our customers we continue to grow. We carry products that support a full range of lapidary and jewelers from the casual hobbyist to full production shops.

Amy O'Connell, a self taught jewelry artist and lapidary was born in Northampton Massachusetts, and relocated to the San Francisco Bay area in 1998 from Iowa City, Iowa. She began handcrafting jewelry in 1992 when she cofounded a body jewelry workshop. Drawing upon her training in the visual arts including design, sculpture, and work with miniatures, jewelry became a natural outlet. Her designs have evolved from steel to traditional work in silver and unusual gemstones. In 1999 she began doing her own lapidary (stone cutting) work. Amy has synthesized a unique style, blending her experience in the arts with a fascination for the art of personal adornment.

Prior to 1990, the original Principals of U.S. JEM, INC Dick and Janice Marsellos,
were rock hounds of sorts. They had spent a year travelling the United States,
discovering all sorts of things. What captured their attention the most was
Sapphire - Montana Sapphire to be more specific. They took an interest in a mine
and were biten from that point forward by what some of us in the trade call
the 'gem bug'. They studied and learned everything they could, they both became
Graduate Gemologists and Janice was going to learn to facet. Dick also became
a certified appraiser.
In 1997 two people with an intense love of opals started the Village Smithy
Opals, Inc. A lot of our opal purchasing money was being spent on opals that
had been filtered through several middlemen and the price was far too high.
We knew we could do better. In 2000, we made our first trip to outback Australia
to buy our opals direct from the miners at a substantial savings
